3×3 Kettlebell Programs

The 3×3 kettlebell programs are focused routines maximizing weight use. The repetitions are low, but because the weights are heavier, the benefits of the programs are very specific. What are you getting all worked-up about?

The taste of his regurgitated meal hinted the inevitable if he continued. Was it too late to back-out? How he wished common sense had guided his decision instead of the bravado that made him select a weight heavier than suggested.

But it looked so deceptively easy, and it was only 3 sets 5 reps per side, how could he have known?

He was now in his second set and just finished one side, his good side.  He had another 5 to go on his weak side, and then another set. His earlier derision haunted him and kept replaying in his head. He had never seen, let alone done this exercise, why did he have to say “that’s not so bad?”

His diaphragm voiced its protest and his stomach acridly reminded him why it is a bad idea to have a heavy meal prior to a kettlebell workout, more so if it involves the infamous Turkish Get Up.

Over the years, I have emphasized that a workout requiring distractions to pass the time is one that truly sucks. What a shame to waste such a terrific learning opportunity and the chance to make ourselves smarter in mind and body.

When are people going to learn that being physically fit involves a lot more than just “moving to burn calories?” And no, I’m not saying that just moving is bad. Movement is good if you plan on being active. Being active is good for circulation and joint health. Even the distracted workout has movement involved and it will be better than nothing.

What Makes us sick, the germ or a poor immune system?

Germ Theory stipulates that we need to kill the microbes, as they are the cause of sickness. Biological Terrain Theory stipulates that it is the health of the host and the strength of the immune system that determines whether or not one gets sick.

This question which first came up in France in the mid 1800s is still worth asking today, because one’s view of how to obtain optimal health and wellbeing depends upon which side of this debate one agrees with. Germ Theory was put forward most famously by French chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur, and states that certain sicknesses are caused by the invasion of micro-organisms that cannot be seen without a microscope. As such, treatment or prevention involves figuring out which microbe (bacteria, virus, fungus, parasite) has invaded the body and then killing it to prevent or stop the disease. This is the theory upon which western medicine is based. You get sick, you go to the doctor and get an antibiotic/antiviral/antifungal to get better. Much of our food, like milk, juices, canned food and even nuts like almonds are pasteurized in order to eliminate the bacteria to avoid sickness. Many people use anti-bacterial soaps and hand sanitizers in order to prevent the spread of infection. These actions are all about killing the germ, and are in support of Germ Theory.

Yes Folks, I’m Human

Baah-haa-haa! Was my reaction to the commotion created by the post A Mermaid or A Whale Exposed. I received emails categorizing me as insensitive and misogynistic, many unfriended me on Facebook, and many opted-out my mailing list.

Just as I expected!

I knew exactly what I getting into as soon as I finished writing my post. I knew it would test the thickness of my skin and my ability to keep a cool demeanor. It is the price for exposing politically incorrect or taboo topics. I touched a nerve in a subject where we – health professionals – are supposed to be huggy-touchy and dare not say what is boiling inside us.

But it needed to be done and I was the one who stepped up to face the firing squad. And what a vicious volley they delivered. The angry voices spoke in colorfully creative invectives … Just as I expected.

There was no sense in holding back but why did I pick such a time to rattle the cage?

Life Lessons and The Road Traveled

Well, and just like that 2012 is current in our calendars.  It reminds me of Mondays, full of possibility, the excitement for what will be accomplished, the excitement to turn the plans from the previous week into reality! I have a hard time understanding why folks dislike Mondays so much, they’re an opportunity for a fresh start or the continuation of greater purposes.

2011 felt like a breeze. Welcome, refreshing, enjoyable but short lived. I know that chronologically it is not shorter than previous year, but it certainly felt so!

One of my traditions since I started writing was to put a recap of the events of the previous year so we can reminiscence the good moments and learn from the hard ones.  It is something all my readers appreciated and could relate to.  I took a hiatus for a couple of years as I was involved in other ventures but I’m returning to it as many have been asking me for it.

There is a rather tongue in cheek post that started circulating around 2009. It got “revised” recently and once again went viral. Sadly, it was turned into one of the most self-serving, ego-shielding  posts in social media I’ve ever read.

Even if you did not read it, chances are you saw it being wildly distributed. I don’t know about you but I almost puked after reading this overreaching diatribe and mourned the mutilation of the original piece.

Very few knew of the existence of the original post and even fewer had the presence of mind to sniff the self-serving, wounded-ego-soothing tone of the irrational tirade. Not surprising since a significant percentage of our population carries superfluous weight but would prefer to seek validation rather than change their reality!

It’s been a privilege seeing many of you and helping your kids address their chronic pain problems. For the parents who have seen me in the past few weeks,   I don’t know if you quite grasp the extent of the gift you just made to your children.

By addressing the Leg Length Inequalities (LLI) and Small Hemipelvis at their early age, your kids will be able to correct them if they are consistent with the corrective measures.  By doing so, you will save them from the misery of chronic pains, joint malformation, joint inflammation, and even from hip and knee replacements in the long term!

There is no greater gift than that.

Whose Fault is It?

To say that I am not touched by your comments and questions would be an understatement.  Thank you for sharing the post with your friends and I’m happy many of you are forwarding it to your pediatricians.

Getting back to business, in the previous installment we learned how prevalent Leg Length Inequalities (LLIs) are.  Yep, up to 90% of the world population has a form of LLI and a significant number of folks who suffer from stubborn chronic pains exhibit one in the range of 4 mm or more.

Coincidence?

Maybe.

But is it also coincidence they find relief once they correct the discrepancy?

There is also another structural issue, frequently accompanying LLIs, that exacerbates or perpetuates chronic pain.

Leg Length Inequalities, Kids, and Injuries

Sometimes the solution is so stupefying simple, it turns us into skeptics. How can it keep escaping our eyes? We are so focused on finding intricacies where none exist that the obvious goes right over our heads.  Are we afraid to yield to simplicity and look uneducated or dumb?  Or is it that the overly segmented view we have of our world blocks us from grasping the simplicity of the whole?

This was the intellectual slap delivered by my teachers as I was learning about the interactions of our bodies with our world, and how understanding them is the key to addressing many seemingly mysterious pains.

For us adults, we have come to expect chronic pains as an inevitable part of the aging process (it does not have to be) but when it comes to children, we are puzzled and scratch our heads. Kids should be out playing, not complaining of chronic back, hip, or neck pain. Or should they? Are we forgetting that the interactions that lead adults to chronic pain also affect children?

Injuries that Should NOT Be

Those who know me personally, know the backstage aspect of my profession.  Over the past few years, I have had the privilege of helping folks overcome painful conditions, return to activity, and get stronger and fitter.  What more could a strength coach ask for?  It is Nirvana!

I am grateful to the brilliant minds that shared their knowledge and guided my path.  Though it would be difficult to name them all, I believe it fair to mention Paul St. John, Randall Clark, Kevin Wade, and Tracy Jones of Neurosomatic Educators Inc in Florida, who introduced me to the system that would forever change my approach to Assessment, Pain Therapy and Strength, and allowed me to bring hope and pain relief to many.

Trying to explain the system in one generalized umbrella is impossible.  The situation gets more complex as I combine it with other modalities which in my experience, work well together.  We are used to generalizing and singling out, but there are circumstances in which doing so undermines the subject and dilutes its essence.

27 Stern but Awesome Fitness Tips

Whenever I do presentations on the topics of exercise, fitness, and strength training, I always run into the same inquiry:

“I love the information! Is there a way you can put the most important points together? You know, something I can refer to and jolt my memory?”

An excellent request but how does one do that and keep it as brief as possible?

Summarizing aspects of exercise science, biomechanics, nutrition, and mindset can get rather touchy since there are sooo many valid good points.  There are hundreds of lists floating around, all equally valid.  You will find many variations, and perhaps contradictions among them, but you will also find some common ground.

Many will love this list, many will not, but what’s certain is that there many unavoidable truths in there, and facing truths makes many very uncomfortable.

Salty Love and Sanity

First off, I would like to say “My Bad!” for being out of touch for so long.  My computer flipped me the bird and got an attitude.  Yes, I did back up my data in case you are wondering. What a relief when I accessed my back-up account and found all my files. Blog posts, articles, pictures, podcasts in progress, videos in progress, you name it, all there.

My computer is fixed and back in action (Thanks Sal! You are an awesome tech bro!).  It took me about a whole month to restore harmony but that’s peanuts compared to the big picture.

Lessons?

You bet! Back up! Back up! Back up!  Those instants of anxiety and uncertainty quickly become a memory once you confirm your intellectual work is safe and sound.  Loving cloud technology!

Anyway, back to business and onto the main topic.  What’s up with this “Salty Love” thing? Hey, get your mind out of the gutter, ain’t nothing like that. The Salty Love comes from the beautiful waters in my backyard, Puget Sound.
